Can you believe the end of the year is just around the corner? Sheesh! It feels like the years keep getting faster and faster. Well, don’t let the passing of time stress you out because we’re going to check out some ultra-fun activities to do as a family on New Year’s Eve. So, get the confetti poppers ready, and let’s end the year off right!
Make a Time Capsule
New Year’s Eve is a wonderful time to reflect on the highlights of the past year, and what better way to persevere those moments than making a time capsule? Bring the family together and go through pictures, schoolwork, and accomplishments. Once you’ve picked out the items, have everyone write a letter to their future selves. Next year you can open the capsule and do it all over again!
Create New Year’s Resolutions
Get motivated for the coming year with a fresh list of goals. Gather around as a family and have everyone write out New Year’s resolutions. As each person shares their goals, offer encouragement and recommendations on how they can achieve them! Once everyone has finished brainstorming individual goals, create a few New Year’s resolutions for the family. By the end of the activity, you’ll feel bonded to each other and excited for the coming year!
Have a Game night
Who doesn’t like a fun night of games, right? It’s a great way to bring the family together and share a few laughs. Try out board games that involve group teams for some good ol’ family competition. Make the losing team do a silly dance or sing a song to spice things up.
Watch Feel-Good Movies
Have a movie-watching party for a relaxed yet fun New Year’s Eve! Pull out all the blankets and pillows in the house and make a cozy area or build comfy forts where everyone can snuggle up! A movie-watching party isn’t complete without snacks, so head to the grocery store earlier in the day to pick up popcorn and your favorite candies.
Read A New Year’s Eve Themed Picture Book
There is never NOT a perfect time to read a book. Cuddle up and read a picture book. Head to the library early and pick up New Year themed picture books and your favorite books too. Here are a few suggestions:
- Squirrel’s New Year Resolution by Pat Miller, illustrated by Kathi Ember
- Felíz New Year, Ava Gabriela! by Alexandra Alessandri, illustrated by Addy Rivera Sonda
- The Night Before New Year’s by Natasha Wing, illustrated by Amy Wummer
Do an (Early) Balloon Countdown with Kids
Waiting until midnight to watch the ball drop might not be realistic if you have little ones, but don’t worry! You can still have your own New Year’s countdown at an earlier time with all the same festivities. A fun activity is to tape balloons to the wall and pop one every hour. Speed up the clock by writing later-than-actual times on the balloons. When the moment comes to pop the last one, celebrate with confetti poppers and share a few family hugs!
Be sure to capture these beautiful moments by taking family pictures.
Wishing you and your loved ones a very Happy New Year!
