Hi everyone! It’s Mandy (mother of 2 – a 5-year-old boy and a 1-year-old girl). I am blogging on Be the Difference, recapping some valuable tips from Empowering Kids With Character – The Show!
October’s theme is Patience and on the 24th, Maria shared another book that will help you explain patience to your child(ren), as well as a fun activity that enforces the patience character trait. You can watch the video here.
The book she shared this week is “Waiting” by Kevin Henkes. This story is about 5 stuffed animals who sit by the window and wait. The pig is waiting for rain, the owl is waiting for the moon, the puppy is waiting for snow, the bear is waiting for wind and the bunny isn’t waiting for anything – he simply enjoys looking out the window. At the end of the story, a cat shows up and is waiting for her other friends! As you read the story, you can talk with your child(ren) about what it looks and sounds like to be patient.
For a hands-on experience in patience, you can help your child write a letter to themselves and mail it, back to themselves. Then wait patiently to see how long it takes for them to get the letter back in the mail. For Maria and her son, it took 3 days to get their letter back. How many days did it take you? Leave a comment on the Facebook video link or below and let us know!
Maria also reminded us about the project she did with her son on patience where they made a suncatcher (she got the idea here). It definitely required patience for her son as it took 7 whole days to dry!!! So if you’re looking for a longer lesson on patience with your child, that’s a good one. ?
Remember that Maria alternates these videos between her author page and the private Empowering Kids with Character page, which provides more ideas on the monthly theme and also support from fellow parents and educators!
