It’s hard to imagine a more valuable (and desired!) character trait in young children than patience! In this video of Empowering Kids With Character – The Show!, author, mother, former teacher, and speaker Maria Dismondy shares a fun game to teach this important life skill.

The only resource needed for this game is a deck of Concentration game (also called Memory).

Playing a game like Concentration is such an entertaining and easy tool for teaching children the valuable attribute of patience! This isn’t a very fast game, as you have to take your time remembering (hence also a great game to exercise your memory muscle!) when you last saw a card. This game also requires taking turns, which further encourages patience. In general, card and board games are fantastic tools for helping children to practice patience – and get in some fun family bonding time!

Note: Maria suggests using half of a deck for younger children or even having all the cards flipped right-side-up for young toddlers when you’re first getting them used to this game.

A family culture of patience and self-discipline is one where kindness and empathy can truly bloom as kids look beyond their immediate desires and recognize the greater good to which they can contribute. It’s equally important for parents to model patience in the home. Hopefully this game will provide many hours of patience-building family fun!
