Hi everyone! It’s Mandy (mother of 2 – an almost 5-year-old boy and a 1-year-old girl). I am blogging on Be the Difference, recapping some valuable tips from Empowering Kids With Character – The Show!
On August 23rd, Maria talked about one problem solving strategy that be done two different ways! You can watch the full video here.
So what is this strategy? It’s role-playing! The first example is the Friendship Talk Ingredient using the “I Message”. An I message is describing a feeling (Maria shared this free download). This download helps you walk through the steps of an I message with your child(ren);
- WHEN YOU (describe the behavior that caused strong feelings)
- I FEEL (tell the feeling you have or had)
- BECAUSE (tell why you feel or felt that way)
- PLEASE (what do you need to happen to feel better?)
- THIS WAY WE CAN (tell how things will improve for both of you)
Included in the above free download are 6 role-playing cards that will help you practice different situations to use an I message with your children. This is a great positive communication strategy, even as adults! ?
The second role-playing strategy is from Pathway to Success and is another free download. The cards share different examples of situations (in three different settings – with friends, with family and in the classroom) that you can review with your children and come up with different strategies to solve those problems!
Role-playing with your children on problem-solving strategies can be so helpful in building their confidence when they are with friends and other family members. Teaching them helpful tools and strategies will empower them to confidently solve issues on their own!
