Last week I gave you basic information on the Common Core. Here are a few more tidbits of information on the topic.
- The standards are set for grade levels but still allow flexibility for teachers to shape instruction to the needs of his or her classroom needs.
- There is a much higher focus on non-fiction text and educators worry about the lack of traditional literature.70% of reading comes from non-fiction and 30% fiction in the high school curriculum. There has been a request for a list of classics to be required for students to read in order for there to be some consistency across the country but this has not been done as of now.
- The Common Core does not properly align with all state standardized tests as of now which poses a problem. This causes for more testing which being a parent and former educator, I can tell you, our children do not need more testing!
