The Common Core standards were released in 2010 and 45 states adopted them across the country. The main hope was that as students move across state lines, the content being taught in classrooms from one state to the next would be the same or at least very similar. Because the government is involved, there has been a major debate over whether or not the standards are appropriate and needed. The truth of the matter is that the standards are not mandated by the government but willingly adopted by the state educational departments. There has also been debate on whether or not the standards were written based on research and the answer is that they were, years of research and findings on what works in education around the world.
