Character Lesson for Mondays - GENEROSITY

Hello readers and thank you for stopping by my blog Be The Difference. I am a children’s book author and mother to three young children. I am dedicated to spreading the important messages in my books to children around the world. I strive to make a difference in my own home by spending time teaching my children character traits using age appropriate activities and quality children’s literature. I am sharing these lessons with you, week-by-week so that you can do the same. Let’s provide our children with tools they can use when they go out into the world and face difficult situations. Let’s give them a chance to grow up to be Problem Solvers! I would love to connect with you and continue this conversation—please see links at the bottom of this post— Maria Dismondy

What is Generosity?

Generosity is freely sharing what you have with others. It is being willing to offer money, help or time when it is needed. To be generous means giving something that is valuable to you without expectation of reward or return. Many traditions measure generosity not by the size of the gift, but by what it cost the giver.

Book I am using with this lesson:

Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch by Eileen Spinelli

How I used this book to teach the trait Generosity

Book: Read or listen to the book with your child.

Discuss:

  • In this book, focus on asking questions BEFORE, DURING and AFTER reading. Encourage your child to predict what is going to happen in the story. Ask your child to make connections. Have they ever felt like the main character, Mr. Hatch?
  • This story illustrates the generosity of a community. How can your family be generous to those in your neighborhood, your city, your state and more?!?!?!

Craft: Make your own Mr. Hatch. Fill out the heart he is holding with a list of character traits that both YOU and Mr. Hatch have such as kindness and generosity.

Activity: A graphic organizer about love and friendship.
