This year my MOPS group has chosen How We Love Our Kids as our book study book. I just finished reading it and had some comments to share with my readers.
I first heard of the book during our Mother’s Day church service. The pastor and his wife spent the entire time talking about their experiences as parents raising five or six children (I can’t remember which). They referred to this book (more than once) written by Milan and Kay Yerkovich as significantly altering their ways of parenting. After being inspired by the beautiful service, several moms in my group said THIS had to be our next book!
The book talks about different Love Styles. Your Love Style is determined by your upbringing during your childhood. So that’s the first step is deciding which Love Style you can relate to. Then the book suggests ways that this Love Style can HINDER your parenting, what you can do to HELP your parenting as well as your relationship with your SPOUSE. I love a book that gives me specific ways to make me a better person rather than making me figure it all our on my own!
The next portion of the book is about identifying which Love Styles your children relate to and how you can best communicate and relate to them. There are awesome suggestions on strengthening your bonds as a family as well.
The next step for me is to start the book study in the fall with my mom group using this book and the DVD that accompanies it.
P.S. There is also another book called How We Love-Discover Your Love Style and Enchance Your Marriage.
