I came across a book on Pinterest the other day and just by the title, knew I had to get it immediately! You Get What You Get by Julie Gassman.
The book arrived this weekend and we’ve read it several times. The title is great because it describes exactly what the book is about. As parents, I’m sure most of us experience children who want everything and if something doesn’t go their way, they throw a fit. I’ve heard the saying “You get what you get and you don’t throw a fit.” This book does a great job of explaining the rule and giving three examples. The examples are things most children can relate to. Not getting the color they wanted, not getting the design they wanted (when the mom struggles because the design they wanted was all sold out) and arguing with a sibling about which movie to watch.
The book has a fine vocabulary, starting with the word disappointment. The character does not deal well with disappointment. If your child doesn’t understand the meaning of this word, they will after reading the story.
The next time your little one throws a fit, refer back to this book. “Remember when the character in the book didn’t like the color of his napkin? He threw a fit! But he learned that he could handle it in a different way!”
