After I read The Happiness Project, I decided to dedicate each month in 2012 to areas in my life I think could use a little TLC.
For January, it was health. I started by reading an amazing book called Crazy Sexy Diet: Eat Your Veggies, Ignite Your Spark, and Live Like You Mean It!. It is not a diet. It is a book that illustrates one woman’s journey from cancer to health. You get a good look at changes she made in her life, chances we all should consider making. The author, Kris Carr, is hilarious and I found myself laughing out loud through out the book! Check out her story in this 8 minute video when she was on Oprah.
I would recommend the book and now I plan on buying it because I could see myself referring back to it time and time again (I checked it out from the library to save money, part of another monthly goal I will discuss later this year). Kris Carr has a great blog and website to go along with the book.
The advice in the book may seem quite radical to some, but for me, I have been making “green” changes to my life for about five years now. It all started when my friends Amy, Danielle and I started a Mom’s Group (mind you, I wasn’t even a mom at the time!) Each month we hosted meetings with guest speakers on topics of health, wellness and parenting, of course!
Changes I made for my health included things like using green cleaning products, green makeup and body care, cloth diapering, making my own soup broth for cooking, drinking protein smoothies, buying meat and eggs from a local farm from grass fed and humanely treated animals, adding supplements and super foods to my meals like chia seeds, coconut oil, wheat germ, etc…to name a few!
We have since stopped meeting as a group but Danielle continues on her journey to educating herself and her friends on her blog, Learning as I Go. Check it out! She has some really great posts!
Here are a few things I started implementing into my daily regimen this month thanks to Kris and her convincing writing! The list may seem overwhelming at first, but once you make something a part of your routine, it’s a no brainer!
1. Cook with less and eat less Gluten
2. Give juicing a try, I’ve grown to love our protein smoothies.
3. Yoga -This link is to the teacher who’s video I have. I used to take classes from his brother here in MI.
4. Drink a glass of warm lemon water in the morning.
5. Throw back wheatgrass shots (see picture above)
6. Dry brushing my skin before showers.
When I make goals, I am sure to make them realistic. For example, we have two young kids at home and I am on a budget. Going to my fancy Yoga studio is not so realistic for me anymore. The cost of Dave and I to go to a yoga class once a week would total close to $60 when you add up the price of the class and babysitter. But, we figured out a way to make Yoga fit our current lifestyle! We did yoga at home with a video and reaped major benefits from just one session so far!
